I Thought I Was Okay, But I Was Just Busy

There’s a common phrase we often hear: “I’m okay.” We say it to friends, family, even ourselves, hoping it’s true. But sometimes, beneath those words lies a different reality — one where we’re not truly okay, just busy.

Sometimes, we believe we are managing life well. We fill every space in our calendar, work long hours and even treat exhaustion like a badge of honour. Our days were filled with meetings, errands, social obligations, and countless little tasks that demand our attention. On the surface, we appeared productive, even thriving. Inside, there is a quiet disconnect that we ignore. We are so busy that we don’t have time to feel, to process, or even to notice that something may be off.

Busyness as a Shield

Busyness can become a shield — a way to avoid facing difficult or uncomfortable emotions or even realities. When you’re constantly moving, it’s easier to push aside feelings like sadness, anxiety, or loneliness. It’s easier to keep going than to stop and ask yourself, “How am I really doing?”

The problem is, busyness is only a temporary distraction. We tell ourselves that we’re fine because being busy looks a lot like being okay. But instead – we are just unavailable to ourselves. Unavailable to process our feelings, trauma or difficult experiences.

We often confuse movement for healing. The emotions you avoid don’t disappear; they just simmer beneath the surface, waiting for a moment when the noise quiets down — which sometimes, is months or even years later.

Emotions As Energy

Emotions are like energy in motion, currents that need to be processed, felt, and fully experienced. When our feelings or experiences are difficult or uncomfortable, it is not uncommon to avoid or suppress those emotions by keeping busy — and running away from them.

Emotions like joy and love, energize and uplift us, while emotions like fear or sadness, can drain us or create friction from being expressed. When we resist or suppress our emotions, they linger and steal from our joy or happiness. But when we allow ourselves to feel them fully, allowing our emotions to flow through and over us like waves, they can transform into understanding, growth, and clarity. Emotions are not meant to be obstacles; they are signals guiding us toward deeper self-awareness.

How we manage and channel these emotional energies directly impacts our well-being and the way we navigate life. Essentially, emotions are both a source of power and a reflection of our inner state — which is sometimes hidden in the hours of our busy lives.

The Moment of Realization

The realization of suppressed or avoided emotions can come slowly — or like a train wreck — with a vengeance. You may start to notice feeling exhausted, not just physically but emotionally drained. You may start to feel disconnected from your own life, as if you were watching it happen rather than living it. You may realize you aren’t okay — just too busy to notice how you were feeling.

When life slows down, this realization may be both painful and freeing. Painful because you have to admit that you weren’t as fine as you thought. Freeing because it meant you could start to change things. To slow down, reflect, and begin to heal.

What Does It Mean to Be Okay?

Being “okay” isn’t about having everything perfect or never feeling down. It’s about being honest with yourself and making space for your true feelings. It means allowing yourself time to rest, to cry, to laugh, and to just be. Nobody teaches us to slow down or rest.

If you’ve ever found yourself saying, “I thought I was okay, but I was just busy,” know that you’re not alone. It’s okay to slow down. It’s okay to seek support. It’s okay to prioritize your well-being over your to-do list.

Moving Forward

Here are a few gentle steps to help you move from just being busy to truly being okay:

  1. Check In With Yourself: Take time each day to ask yourself, “How am I really feeling?”
  2. Create Space: Schedule time for rest, hobbies, things that bring you joy, or simply doing nothing.
  3. Seek Connection: Talk to someone you trust about what’s going on inside. Talk to a therapist.
  4. Be Kind to Yourself: Remember that it’s okay not to be okay all the time.
  5. Prioritize Self-Care: Whether it’s exercise, meditation, or a walk outside, find what nourishes your soul.

Remember, busyness can hide a lot, but it can’t heal what’s inside. Take time to take care of yourself so life’s experiences don’t continue to pile up unprocessed or avoided – until it hits with a vengeance. Being truly okay means listening to your heart, even when it’s hard. And that’s a brave, beautiful step.
