Build a Life Worth Living – One Skill at a Time

At Wave Counselling & Wellness, we’re passionate about helping you build a meaningful life— one rooted in awareness, resilience, and healthy relationships. That’s why we’re excited to introduce our newest service: the Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Skills Group.

Whether you’re struggling with intense emotions, relationship difficulties, or unhelpful behaviours, DBT offers a compassionate and practical path toward change.

What is DBT?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that blends cognitive-behavioural strategies with mindfulness and acceptance practices. It was originally developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan to treat individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), but today it’s used around the world to support people facing a wide range of emotional and behavioural challenges.

What makes DBT unique is its core dialectic — the idea that two seemingly opposite things can both be true:

“I am doing the best I can and I need to do better.”
“I accept myself and I am working toward change.”

DBT helps individuals hold space for these dual truths by balancing acceptance with change. Through this balance, DBT empowers people to move out of survival mode and into a more values-driven, intentional life.

Who Can DBT Help?

DBT is especially helpful for people who experience:

  • Intense, rapidly shifting emotions
  • Impulsive or self-destructive behaviours
  • Difficulty navigating relationships
  • Persistent feelings of emptiness or self-criticism
  • Chronic anxiety or depression
  • Disordered eating, substance use, or self-harm

If you often feel overwhelmed, stuck in painful patterns, or uncertain about how to cope in healthy ways, DBT can give you the skills to break the cycle and move toward emotional stability and self-respect.

How DBT Works: The Four Skill Modules

DBT is built on four core skill sets that support emotional regulation, relationship health, and mental clarity: Mindfulness The foundation of DBT.

🧘 Mindfulness
Helps you slow down, tune in to the present moment, and become more aware of your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours — without judgment. These skills are crucial for gaining clarity, making conscious decisions, and interrupting reactive patterns.

🌊 Distress Tolerance
Life can be painful and unpredictable. Distress tolerance skills teach you how to survive emotional crises without making things worse. Whether you’re facing a breakup, a panic attack, or a triggering situation, these skills provide tools to ride out the storm safely and effectively.

🔥 Emotion Regulation
Emotions aren’t the enemy — but when they feel out of control, they can hijack your behaviour. Emotion regulation skills help you understand your emotional patterns, reduce emotional reactivity, and build a life with more stability and positive feelings.

🤝 Interpersonal Effectiveness
Healthy relationships are built on clear communication, boundaries, and self-respect. This module teaches you how to assert your needs, say no when necessary, and navigate conflict while maintaining your integrity and connections with others.

About the DBT Skills Group Program

Our DBT Skills Group is a structured, classroom-style program led by trained therapists. It’s not group therapy in the traditional sense — instead, it’s more like a skills training course, with weekly sessions that combine education, discussion, mindfulness practice, and real-world application.

  • In-person and online options
  • Workbook and materials included
  • Between-session practice assignments
