Critical Incident Stress Management Service
Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) is a comprehensive approach to crisis intervention, specifically designed to address critical incident stress following traumatic events. This involves small and/or large group debriefings, along with individual support and follow-up as needed. Critical incidents are highly challenging events that can cause significant human distress, potentially overwhelming one’s typical coping mechanisms. CISM’s crisis intervention is an active, short-term and supportive process aimed at alleviating psychological distress.
Group crisis interventions or debriefings are voluntary with facilitated discussions aimed to create a safe space for individuals affected by a traumatic event. Participants can openly talk about the incident, their experiences during and after it and what might happen in the future. Debriefing is not counselling but rather a structured intervention to help individuals put the abnormal events into perspective. The main goal is to provide a method for organizing thoughts and reactions about the incident. This discussion enables participants to address their current experiences and anticipate potential future reactions within the context of the event.
