The Coldplay Concert and the Conversations We’re Not Having

Book cover for The State of Affairs: Rethinking Infidelity by Esther Perel

At a recent Coldplay concert, a couple caught on the big screen was later outed for having an affair — not because Chris Martin knew anything, but because the cameras randomly landed on them. Totally accidental. But of course, the internet ran with it.

It’s a wild story, but also a good moment to pause and reflect on how affairs are discussed. Esther Perel, in The State of Affairs, reminds us that infidelity isn’t always about a bad partner or a failing relationship. Sometimes it’s about the parts of ourselves that have been lost, the longing to feel something again, or the need to break out of emotional silence.

Perel writes, “We spend more time on our rental agreements than we do on our relationship agreements.” Few people sit down to talk about what commitment, desire, emotional safety — or even honesty — actually mean in their relationships.

Part of the problem? Many people never learned how to express their deeper emotional lives. Feelings are often suppressed to avoid conflict. Disappointment is hidden out of fear. Desire gets tiptoed around because it feels too vulnerable or selfish. Over time, that silence creates distance.

Perel explains that many affairs aren’t about sex — they’re about longing. A longing to feel seen. To feel alive. To reconnect with a version of the self that’s been buried under responsibility, routine, or relationship roles.

So while this couple’s moment on the big screen might look like drama or scandal, it may actually reflect something far more human: the struggles with communication, unmet emotional needs, and the deep discomfort many people feel around asking for what they truly want.

What if, instead of pointing fingers, the questions became:

  • What was missing?
  • What was being searched for?
  • What conversations never felt safe enough to have?

Just to be clear — this isn’t about promoting affairs. It’s about understanding their complexity.

Because when looking closer, it becomes clear that affairs are often less about betrayal alone — and more about disconnection, suppressed emotions, and unspoken longings that were left unattended for too long.

The Cost of Unspoken Emotions

One of the most common patterns seen in long-term relationships is emotional avoidance. Many couples stop talking about how they really feel — not out of malice, but out of habit, fear, or fatigue. Conversations about loneliness, disappointment, or disconnection are often brushed aside, minimized, or replaced with surface-level interactions.

Over time, emotional silence becomes the norm. Intimacy shifts into routine. Needs go unvoiced. Vulnerability starts to feel unsafe. When couples stop checking in emotionally, they also stop growing together — and the distance that grows between them is rarely addressed directly.

The truth is, most couples aren’t taught how to have hard conversations — the kind that require openness, reflection, and a willingness to sit with discomfort. But avoiding those conversations doesn’t make the tension go away. It just pushes it underground, where it quietly builds.

Bringing emotions back into the conversation — even awkwardly, even imperfectly — can create space for reconnection. It’s not about having the perfect words. It’s about being willing to show up honestly, even when it’s hard.

Because what often breaks relationships isn’t conflict — it’s the absence of emotional truth.
